Spare Parts, founded in 2011, is spearheaded by Mary Elizabeth Cantú. Cantú, an educator and art advocate, founded Spare Parts as a response to current studies showing a decrease of creativity in the classroom, budget cuts in arts funding and the City of San Antonio’s Zero Waste Initiative.
Spare Parts’ main objective is to connect with various agencies, businesses and interested citizens to
provide a steady supply of materials (otherwise trashed) for the artistic community and educators. The result is an increase in the creative and cultural energy of San Antonio. Spare Parts’ purpose is unprecedented in San Antonio. It is the leader in reuse education through the arts. “I am not about to let the arts slip from our schools because of funding cuts or diminishing resources,” said Cantú. “Spare Parts efforts falls right in line with the Mayor’s SA2020 goals for growing the art and cultural profile of San Antonio.”
“We are thrilled to see that Spare Parts is expanding its efforts tosupportSan Antonio’sarts community, reduce the city’s environmental footprint and add value to the local economy”, says MaryEllen Etienne, Executive Director of Reuse Alliance – a national nonprofit that promotes all facets of reuse. She adds, that “We’re also pleased that Cantú is sharpening her leadership skills by participating in our Master Reuser program and will be the first person in San Antonio to go through the certification program.”
Spare Parts supports: cultural and environmental sustainability; affordability and accessibility to the arts; and community, education and creativity, green-style.
Spare Parts thanks the following supporters: Wonderland of the Americas, St. Paul Catholic School, Scobey Moving & Storage, International Academy of Design & Technology, ArtGives.Org and 10BitWorks Hackerspace.
